What Skills can I Learn?

Both your stats, level, and your hometown are going to determine what skills you qualify to learn. Some skills require you to be a certain level before you can learn them, all skills will require you have a certain minimum amount of certain stats, and other skills are restricted by hometown. To add to the complexity, some skills have pre-requisites, and others block you from learning certain other skills. So as you begin your character's career, it's a good idea to do a little research into what skills you want to learn, so that you don't end up learning a skill that stops you from learning other more essential skills.

The quickest way to see what skills you currently can learn is to type ALLSKILLS. This will show you a list of everything that you currently qualify to learn. This means that if you change your stats by gaining equipment you might qualify for more (or fewer) skills. Skills shown with a + are skills you have already learned, and currently able to use. The SKILLS command will show you only the skills you have learned, even if you are unable to currently use them. Skills marked with a - are ones you have learned, but no longer able to use (usually this is because your stats have changed and you no longer meet the minimum requirements.) Both ALLSKILLS and SKILLS will tell you how many unused practices you have.

If you want more information about a skill (whether it's one you see on your allskills, or one you've just heard about), you can get more information in two ways. HELP <skillname> will bring up information about that skill including what commands you type to use it.
For example, HELP BASH:

Syntax: bash <victim>
Syntax: bash (if already fighting)

Inflicts damage in addition to your regular attack for that round. Success
is based on a comparison of your strength to the strength of your opponent,
and there's a chance you could fall (have your position set to sitting)
if you fail badly enough. If you are successful, you will be unable to attempt
any other action (including another bash, or fleeing) for three fight rounds.
If you are unsuccessful, you will be unable to attempt any other action
(including another bash, or fleeing) for two rounds. If you are bashed by a
mob, we suggest you stand up as soon as possible as you will take more damage
when sitting.

Another way to find more information about a skill is the QUERY command. Query <skillname> gives you information about whether or not you can learn or know that skill. Even handier, however, is QUERY FULL. QUERY FULL <skillname> gives you information about the stats required to learn the skill, what skills you may need to know first, if there are any skills that you cannot learn with this skills, and whether your hometown might not be able to use this skill.
For example "QUERY FULL BASH":

Skill Name: bash
Level: 2
Str: 33

The following are required to learn this skill based on the above qualifications:

You cannot learn this skill if you know any of the following,
and this skill prevents learning any of the following skills:

  • *assail*

  • *evasion*

You know this and can use it.

So to learn bash you must be at least level 2, have at least 33 strength, there are no skills you need to learn before you can learn bash, and you cannot learn assail or evasion and bash together. The character in this example already knows bash and meets the requirements to use it.

####How do I Learn Skills?

Now that you know what skills you can learn, where do you learn them? LegendMUD's skill learning system is unique. It is immersed into the world. Skill teachers are mobs within the world, across all areas and all eras. Often there is more than one teacher for a skill. Hometowns often have teachers of basic fight skills in the area. Other skills you may need to journey far and wide to find the appropriate teacher.

When looking for a skill teacher, start by asking yourself who would it make sense would know this skill? There usually is some logic behind who teaches a skill. For example, a weaver or tailor might teach how to mend your clothes. A warrior might teach fight skills. To find out if a mob will teach you a skill, you must ASK them. Start by ASK <mobname> TEACH (or ASK <mobname> LEARN). They will either respond with a generic response, or they will tell you what it is they are willing to teach you. If you do not have any practices available or are unable to learn the skill they may not tell you what they teach, or will tell you to come back later (usually with some hint as to what you need to do to be able to learn).

Once you have found someone willing to teach you a skill, simply ASK <mobname> <skillname>. For example, ASK WEAVER MENDING. Some mobs will require something from you before they will teach you. For example, they might charge a fee, or ask you to bring them something in exchange. At which point, you once you meet their requirement, they will teach you the skill. Sometimes you might have to ask them something else as well, such as agreeing that you want to learn. Basically, learning a skill can be a mini-quest. Other teachers, you simply ask, and they teach you. If you find yourself having difficulty with a teacher asking for a mini-quest, don't be afraid to ask other players for help.

####More Information

The in-game help system has a lot of information available and is often a great place to start if you need more information.
Suggested Help file readings:

  • Help Skills
  • Help Query
  • Help <skillname> (for information about a particular skill)

Finally, if you don't feel like asking every mob you meet "teach", or are having trouble locating a teacher for a skill you would like to learn, LegendHUB has documented all the skills with their known skill teachers. This list does not claim to be exhaustive, it is entirely possible to find a teacher not listed here, but it can be a starting place when you have trouble finding one on your own.
