How Do I Get Coins?

###How Do I Get Coins?

Earning money at low levels can be a bit difficult, but not impossible. The easiest way to earn money is to sell items found on the mobs that you have killed. Using the INSPECT <item> command, you can get an idea of how much a shopkeeper will give you for an item. As a general rule, weapons are usually worth the most. You can also INSPECT CORPSE to see the information for everything on the corpse.

For example:
Marigold Inspection

In the above example, the most you could possibly get from a shopkeeper is 15 coins. However, most shopkeepers buy for less than the maximum. It will be rare to ever find a shopkeeper that actually buys an item for its maximum worth. You can see how much a shopkeeper will give you for an item by typing VALUE <item> when you are at the shopkeeper.

Value

As you can see, Alfredo is only willing to give me 7 coins for the marigold, even though inspect says I can get 15. If you want, you can try using the VALUE command at different shopkeepers until you find the best price. Once you're happy with the price offered you can SELL <item> to the shopkeeper.

##Money Running Strategies

There are a few different strategies you can take for earning money. One is selling the items you've found to shopkeepers. This can be quite lucrative, especially once you reach higher levels and can take on bigger mobs, who have better items for selling.

Another strategy is to kill mobs that have large amounts of gold on them. This can be a quick way to earn money, assuming the mobs are up. Because it's quick and relatively easy, the money mobs are killed quite often.

Finally, once you reach higher levels, you can sell items directly to other players. Either through the auction channel (use CONSIGN <item> command) or through your own player-shop. Having a player-shop requires you have bought player housing, which requires a considerable amount of coins, so this is probably something that will not happen until you reach higher levels.

Remember to CONSIDER mobs before you try to kill them. Many of the money mobs are too tough for lower levels.

##Monetize Command

One of the struggles with money running can be that carrying around all the stuff you want to sell can put you over rent. Don't worry, there's a command for that! MONETIZE <item> will mark an item as something you are planning to sell, it will no longer count toward your rent total. However, it will also not be saved if you rent out (or there is a crash or reboot) and it cannot be used or worn until it has been sold to an NPC shopkeeper, and then bought back. Items that have been monetized also cannot be sold in player shops.

##Where Can I Sell Stuff?

The short answer is... shopkeepers around the mud. There are several NPC shopkeepers that will buy items, though not all shopkeepers are interested in all items. For the explorers reading this, I won't ruin it by telling you which shopkeepers have the best prices. If you want to know, ask around, other players will be happy to tell you. Or just try the value command when you find a shopkeeper.

If you have an item that is of value to another player, you can, of course, sell directly to them through the Auction Channel, or through your own player shop. These options, however, are not likely to be useful until you are of a higher level and have earned some money already.
